Bulgarian Symbolism and Mythology: Sacred (sacred) proto-Bulgarian birds such as cock, dove and peacock are associated with the fire-sun cult. Folk perceptions relate the rooster to the parts of the round-the-clock cycle. This way, according to the traditional imagery transition time between sunset and the first cock-a-doodle-doo is part of the day, when they appear - the dark mythological characters - goblins, bugbears, vampire and others. The rooster's song make them lose their power. The behavior of the rooster on the other hand is one of the landmarks in Bulgarian folk meteorology. The well-known custom "Petlyovden" has an ancient Slavic origin. It is a "regional holiday celebrated in the East Bulgarian territory, from Dobrudja to Edirne and Lozengrad inclusive". Rooster's Day on women and mothers of boys sacrificed a cock, which gives meaning to the holiday as a rite of health and fertility of boys and male potency.
